Frequently Asked Questions

What do you buy?

We buy records of all genres and formats, but of course some things are more valuable than others. Click here for a detailed blog post about what we tend to look for.

What will you give me for my records?

We pay you based on the current market value of your records. In general, we try to pay you around half of what we expect to sell your collection for. This allows us room to cover our expenses and hopefully make a small profit.

Do you offer consignment terms?

We can do consignment terms if necessary, but we prefer to pay up front in cash.

How many records will you buy at once?

We routinely buy several thousand records at a time, but we buy small collections too. Your best bet is to contact us and let us know what you have and we can go from there.

How do you appraise records?

Our buyers are extremely well-trained at making accurate appraisals based on market value. We look at a broad range of data from online sites like Discogs and eBay as well as our own historical sales data from our years of selling. Click here for more information about how we appraise records.

How much are my Beatles records worth?

We want your Beatles records, but they aren’t going to put your kids through college. Most Beatles records had millions of copies pressed, and while there is consistent demand for old copies there is also a steady supply. We sell most of our Beatles records for $10-25 depending on condition, pressing, etc., so we generally pay $5-15 depending on those same factors. Of course, if we find a rarer or more valuable record like the infamous Butcher Cover we’ll let you know and pay you appropriately.

What is the buying process like?

Our buyers are friendly and polite, and we’re always happy to spend a little time chatting with a fellow music lover. In general, though, we try to be respectful of your time while being as thorough as possible with our appraisal. If you tell us about your collection, we can give you more details about what to expect from your appointment.

Do you make housecalls?

Yes! Contact us and we’ll come to you. If we make a deal, we’ll also do all of the heavy lifting.

Where do my records go after I sell them to you?

The Record People sell in a variety of venues, including brick and mortar shops, online sites like Discogs and eBay, and at regional and national record fairs and conventions. We find the venue that’ll get us the best price so that we can give you the best price for your collection.

Can’t I get more money for my records if I sell them myself online?

The short answer is, “yes.” We provide a service for people who don’t have the time or the expertise to sell each record in their collection individually.

To elaborate, though, ask anyone who sells online and they’ll tell you that it can be deceptively expensive and time-consuming. Between the time you’ll spend cataloguing, photographing, and listing your collection and the substantial fees (often 20% or more of the sale price) that will come directly out of your bottom line, you probably won’t come out that far ahead. That’s not to mention the hassle of dealing with returns from unsatisfied customers and lost or damaged parcels, both of which are far more likely if you aren’t an experienced seller. In almost all cases, you’ll make nearly as much money by selling your collection to us, and the hardest thing you’ll have to do is cash the check.
